How much $ for a good nights sleep ?

Friday, October 22nd, 2010

Below is a page from our play book. We want you to enjoy your biggest investment (your home) for years and years. Upgrading the breakers to a computer assisted breaker is the best way to increase the safety for your home.

Arc Fault Breakers installed in existing homes.

This new type of breaker is required for new homes and many towns require this AFCI breaker for circuit extensions and panel change outs. This is a quantum advance in home safety, but not without some draw backs. As we are required by state and local laws to install this device in your home breaker panel, we must comply and we want you to be as safe as possible. Below are some of the existing problems that surface when the new breaker is installed.

• An appliance plug damaged by impact repeatedly caused tripping of the AFCI until the problem was discovered. When the appliance cord was replaced, no further tripping of the AFCI occurred.

• A room air conditioner that had a short in the motor windings  tripped the AFCI breaker.
The  AFCI breaker was questioned until the offending appliance was discovered and disconnected.

• An AFCI installed in a new building tripped repeatedly until damage caused by a nail through insulation was discovered and corrected.

• An AFCI breaker replacing an older breaker in a building tripped as soon as it was turned on. The installing electrician found the problem with extensive evidence of arcing in an old lighting fixture.

• A breaker panel change out included AFCI breakers for all living areas. The  AFCI was installed in an existing circuit. The AFCI tripped when the circuit was first energized after the installation. Wire nuts on the fan motor were replaced and the problem was corrected.

• An AFCI tripped when retrofitted into an existing circuit. Examination of the circuit disclosed that wire insulation had burnt back exposing bare conductors near their connection to a receptacle. The exposed wires had been arcing through the charred insulation. It appeared that heat from a loose connection at the receptacle had caused
the wires to burn back.

As you might guess from this list, the greatest number of fires caused by electrical problems are in homes ten years old and older. Changes to the electrical system over the years and misuse or attic traffic and cause the wiring to deteriorate. However; fires from electrical arcs are recorded for homes of all ages. These new breakers are the best way to prevent this type of fire in your home.Safety is no accident. How much is a good night’s sleep worth?

There is a New Sheriff in town. The arc-fault breaker.

Monday, October 18th, 2010

Well, things have changed. The new sheriff is a breaker with a computer chip at it’s heart. This new sheriff will enforce all the laws that are programmed into its little brain. No tolerance, and no mercy. Enter the new sheriff, The AFCI breaker.

Computers are like that. No personality and they don’t smile. That is the good news, because you don’t want a problem with your wiring or a plug in appliance to start a fire and be the cause of property damage and injury.

• “An appliance plug damaged by impact repeatedly caused tripping of the

• A room air conditioner that had developed a defect tripped the AFCI.
The performance of the AFCI was questioned until the offending
appliance was discovered and disconnected. The AFCI continues in
service with no further tripping.

• An AFCI installed in a new building tripped repeatedly until damage
caused by a nail through insulation was discovered and corrected.

• An AFCI installed as a retrofit in an older building tripped as soon
as it was turned on. The installing electrician found the problem with
extensive evidence of arcing in an old lighting fixture.

• Another damaged lamp with line-to-ground arcing was found when an
AFCI was installed in an existing circuit. The AFCI tripped when the

all homes become older homes. If the protection is not present before
they age, they will remain unprotected as they age.”

Safety is no accident. How much is a good night’s sleep worth?

Changing out your breaker panel?

Monday, October 18th, 2010

In years past when a problem arises with too small a breaker panel or the existing panel was damaged by overheating, we would usually upgrade the size and amount of breaker spaces with no questions. We all are guilty of adding more and more appliances and bigger TV’s and hairdryers and , and , etc.  We all want more power. In fact we need more power. This is a fact of life.    More POWER!   More POWER!

Times have changed. The new National Electric Code is here. And, the local electrical inspectors have changed their opinion on upgrades. Some cities require the new circuit breaker to be the new code compliant arc-fault breaker. Some cities do not. When you install an arc-fault breaker, be prepared to spend some time tracing out the circuit and making small repairs to the connections.

This new style breaker is great when it comes to a new level of safety. It also comes with a price. Your existing wiring has to be repaired or replaced in some cases before the new breaker can be energized.

Be prepared for the extra time and ask your contractor to be as specific as possible about the extra time charges.  Most of these wiring issues are not visible , nor can you anticipate the hidden connections or a bad motor connection until the work is almost finished and the new breaker is energized.

I will have more articles in the near future as we have changed out many panels and we are starting a data base on the issues and problems with this new type of breaker.  Thanks for reading and know that this new breaker is a lifesaver.
