Who will pay the electric bill ?

Sunday, May 1st, 2011

I’m not talking about the bill you get each month from the electric company. I’m talking about the bill to upgrade and repair the damage from too many electric cars plugged in at home.

In a quote from a major utilities trade group, “Blown transformers, neighborhood blackouts and other problems could emerge”. These problems will occur as we add  more and more load to our existing ageing and stressed electric grid.

If you have listened to the news over the past few years, you have heard of the money and energy we can save by changing out a few light bulbs and lowering your thermostat. Buy some more insulation and change out the old windows in your house. All these changes work great and I heartily agree with saving energy.

BUT

As you save energy, your new neighbors and your children are building homes of their own. They want electricity and they demand electricity just as their parents home have. More and more people are using electricity and stressing the network that delivers power to your home and business.

Add to this mix, the demand to re-fuel an electric car. The power you use to re-fuel your electric car is cheaper than gasoline, the power for the batteries coming from household electric lines can stress your homes electrical wiring. Put a bunch of these cars in one neighborhood, and you have a formula for a blackout.

Electric Cars, The numbers don’t work!

Wednesday, March 2nd, 2011

The President calls for one million electric cars on the road in four years. We can build a million electric cars, but who will buy them or drive them.

Reality will win out, we will have electric cars and the best of them will shine. The numbers will not grow as fast as we want just because someone says so. Public demand will drive the market. The largest buyer will be the federal government.  The private fleet will increase as the value rises.

Electric Cars ? Where is the Pollution ?

Monday, July 19th, 2010

When you drive an electric car, you are among the few people who have made the choice to do something about the current oil and gasoline situation.

We buy a lot of our oil from nations that would do us harm. We emit chemicals and gasses into the air that are harmful to humans. Sometimes, we spill that fuel on the ground or in the sea. We have known about these issues for years and years.

I personally remember driving into Denver or Dallas or Baltimore, and seeing a blanket of yellow/brown haze over these cities. Then came unleaded gas. Then came the catalytic converter, then fuel injection, and then the computor driven engine, and then , and then, and add your favorite here.

We have come a long way in the area of clean air. I know we are not where we want to be yet.

When you charge your electric car at your house at night, remember where the electricity comes from.  The vast majority of electricity in Texas is produced by natural gas or coal.

When we burn carbon based fuel to make another form of energy, we are trading off the point where the emissions are released. When you use energy, you will have waste products.  Most cars have the waste at the tailpipe.  The new cars will have the waste at the powerplant smokestack.

Have we really come as far as we wanted too? We are not there yet, but our journey didn’t start yesterday and I don’t think we can have all the answers tomorrow. Keep working at conserving.
