Your Electric Bill will go up. Wanna know why?

Monday, February 14th, 2011

When the weather is bad and very , very cold; we use more electricty and gas than normal. We have experienced one of the coldest winters in memory and we are not even through February yet. Because of this peak usage and the rolling blackouts, the price of electricity for the retail electric providers (REP) spiked and this caused many of the REP’s to have to go to the open market to buy more power. They did not predict this cold weather.

Oh, the price of electricity on the open or “spot” market can be more than 100 times the normal price. What would you do if your electric bill went up to 100 times normal. Read on for more on this issue. Things will change. Will we be ready for this change.

Power to the People

If you follow the electric rates in Texas, you know how many players sell electricity for your home. One site to find the players is Power to Choose .org. There are lots and lots of choices and lots of rate plans and lots of different prices.

There are so many companies that want your money, that The State of Texas set up a quasi government entity to be a watch dog over all these power players. The name for this overseer of all things electric in Texas is  — Electric Reliability Council of Texas. ( ERCOT) But, what’s in a name now-days. ERCOT? escargot?

What does this mean for you and me?  It means you have a choice (in most locations) of where you buy your electricity. ERCOT will watch over all the retailers and the transmission companies and the people that actually generate the electricity that brightens your home and heats your water.

If a company is in financial trouble or has other problems that will keep them from selling you electricity when you want it, ERCOT will step in and make things right or stop the offending company from selling electricity. Only the financially sound companies can operated in this market. And so, let me tell you of a local company that sells electricity for your home and business.

I went to a ribbon cutting ceremony in Lewisville today for First Choice Power. Let me tell you, this was not what I expected.

1st, who in their right mind (no offense to left handed people) would spend all this time and money to have real people answer your questions face to face. The norm today is to do business over the internet or the phone. Some companies use the MLM (multilevel marketing) system to sell their wares. Then you get someone to come to your home.

With First Choice Power, you can actually walk in to the store and talk to a real person.

Get Real!  No utility company does this any more. We used to have a name for this. It was called customer service.

At our shop, we have never used an answering machine. I have real people answer my phone 24/7. This is part of our customer service commitment. We work hard to listen to our customers and give them what they ask for.

(As a result of our constant focus on customer service; We at Jeffries Electric have come to recognize good customer service. We are constantly reminded by our customers of their needs. We are instantly reminded when we fail.)

After spending the better part of an hour talking and listening to the First Choice Power people, I recognized a commitment to customer service. With lip service so prevalent and real service so rare, the business model First Choice Power has chosen, really stands out. It really does look to be a commitment to helping people make good choices about where to spend their hard earned dollar.

So, here’s to First Choice Power !  Good luck with your new store. We can all be winners when good service is offered.

P.S.  I want tell you about this store they opened. Energy efficent is not just a buzz word here. But, that is for another blog post.
