Wind is Too Much for the Power Grid

Wednesday, April 13th, 2011

Well, we have hit the wall with our power production, maybe. Did you ever think that the power grid would have too much power on it?

This could be a train wreck

This  very thing could happen this spring. When the best time of year to produce wind power is also the time of year when the mountain snows melt and the hydro electric production is at full swing, this could be the result.

The North West has passed laws that require the purchase of non-hydro generated green energy. Now we will see who really pays for the opportunity to be green. Read on in the post below.

We have always known that the big stationary generators can not be turned on and off like a light switch. Now the problems with temporary power production have started to manifest. This sounds like a good problem (too much power)  unless you own a wind generator in the North West.

One side note to this story, inside the story is a comment that most of the profit from wind is from tax credits. These credits can not be collected if the generator is not running. So evidently, the most desirable product from this business is not electricity but money. Something a person can really use such as electricity plays a small part of this game. And all this time you thought these green business’s just liked helping people and being nice.

We do things like this at the Federal Level. Too much of a product? Just raise the price.

Kinda sounds like having oil in the ground and told not to use it because this week we have too much oil. Oh, wait. that’s not right.

One solution would be to just raise the price and keep people from buying as much of this product.    Oh, wait. Then we will have even more energy sitting there not being used and we will have to raise the price some more.

At some point, we will learn how to harness all this energy and not break the bank. As for me, I hope it’s soon. I read today that all the oil reserves are full and they have no place to store any more oil in the US. That means only one thing. Raise the price and keep people from using as much.

This could get expensive if you like to use energy. Kinda sounds like a merry-go-round out of control.

How much do you really spend on Electricty

Monday, March 29th, 2010

Most customers ask us how they can reduce their electric bill. It is so easy to say ” Conserve Electricity.” or we can say there are many ways to save by not using as much. ie., better windows, more insulation, more efficient appliances. This is where you can really save money, At the Meter.

smart meters

electric meters

What I’ve found in my own home, is; I don’t pay enough attention to my electricity usage until I get the monthly bill.

Now we have smart meters to contend with. Do you know what makes them smart?  I don’t. I understand the technology that drives the mechanism. I understand the communication protocol that send billing info to the power company. None of this is rocket science.

But what is so smart about a very accurate device that sends info off to an unseen company and won’t let you see what going on?  Won’t even give you little peak at the data. I wouldn’t call that smart.

I think I would like to see what I’m paying for. Even at the local store, I can look at the items I want and decide if I want to purchase before I hand over the money.

With your electric utility company, you pay for an unseen product and you have no way to tell if your getting what you ordered. What if I got only 3lbs of steak, and I ordered 5lbs?  What if the grocery wrapped up bleu cheese and not swiss?  At least I could ask for a refund.

Well folks; a new age has dawned. Now you can see and measure your power before you get the bill. I won’t say you can order green instead of blue, but I can tell you if got 5 lbs and not 4.88 lbs of power. Really not new, but some thing much easier to use and less costly to install than a few years ago. This new device is called ” The Energy Detective”.  Other things you can measure and manage on an  instant or daily basis are

  • total power usage
  • daily power usage
  • instant power usage
  • large or small appliances
  • views by Kwh or by dollar amount $
  • I phone apps let you see your homes power while you’re at work.
  • many more
  • last months power usage history ( after 1 month of recording)
