Open market did not help electric prices or service

“We may have dozens of companies competing for customers under the state’s electric deregulation law, but unfortunately that has not translated into better service”

I must agree with the Star Telegram in this piece. I have seen the response from my customers each time we must deal with the retail power providers. The old line and pole companies seem to be swimming in red tape and regulations. Unless you have a co-op such as Co-serve or Denton Municiple Electric serving your area, you will be in for a bad surprise when you call for service to the lines or for a power outage.

Energy Efficiency Standards for Residential Appliances

Appliance manufacturers must produce products that either meet minimum federal energy efficiency standards, or that consume no more than the amount of energy than federal standards allow.

The U.S. Congress established minimum energy efficiency standards for many major appliances through:

  • Part B of Title III of the Energy Policy and Conservation Act (EPCA)
  • Public Law 94-163, as amended by the National Energy Conservation Policy Act
  • Public Law 95-619, by the National Appliance Energy Conservation Act
  • Public Law 100-12, by the National Appliance Energy Conservation Amendments of 1988
  • Public Law 100-357
  • The Energy Policy Act of 1992
  • Public Law 102-486.

These standards do not affect the marketing of products manufactured before the standards went into effect. Any products already made and in stock can be sold.

Appliances and other products covered by these standards include:

  • Refrigerators
  • Freezers
  • Room air conditioners
  • Clothes dryers
  • Clothes washers
  • Dishwashers
  • Kitchen ranges and ovens
  • Pool heaters
  • Television sets (withdrawn in 1995)
  • Water heaters
  • Fluorescent lamp ballasts
  • Incandescent reflector lamps

Through these laws, Congress also has established schedules for the U.S. Department of Energy to review and revise these standards.

Energy Guide Label

As a result of these federal laws, the Federal Trade Commission has established the Appliance Labeling Rule, which requires manufacturers of most major home appliances to attach labels that provide an estimate of the product’s energy consumption or energy efficiency. These familiar yellow-and-black EnergyGuide labels also show the highest and lowest energy consumption or efficiency estimates of similar appliance models.

As always, the best energy strategy is to save energy or not use it. Think before you leave your house or office each day. What do I need to turn off and what has to stay on.

No power to power the power plants. “Electricity gone wild”

Saturday, February 5th, 2011

I have been using my wood stove for the past few days and thinking about all the homes that don’t have this luxury. Many people in the DFW area were without power for 14 hrs at a time. The rolling black outs could be equated to a game of stacking dominoes.

No Power

The structure you build looks great, but if you have any experience in this game, you know what the outcome is. As soon as someone bumps the table or sneezes when they place a domino, the whole game gets very exciting and then you start over.

Thanks to the Ft. Worth Star Telegram for exposing this domino game. We should know better by now. We are all adults and many of the people that design and plan for power issues have a college education. Some of these people should ask for a refund from the college they attended.

Timers are most cost effective for electric heaters. Timers are not as useful on gas water heaters because of their pilot lights.

Contact your utility to see if it offers a demand management program. Some utilities offer “time of use” electricity rates that vary according to the demand on their system. They charge higher rates during “on-peak” times and lower rates during “off-peak” times. Some even offer incentives to customers who allow them to install control devices that shut off electric water heaters during peak demand periods. These control devices may use radio signals that allow a utility to shut off a water heater remotely anytime demand is high. Shut-off periods are generally brief so customers experience no reduction in service.

You can reduce your water heating costs by simply lowering the thermostat setting on your water heater. For each 10ºF reduction in water temperature, you can save between 3%–5% in energy costs.

Although some manufacturers set water heater thermostats at 140ºF, most households usually only require them set at 120ºF. Water heated at 140ºF also poses a safety hazard—scalding. However, if you have a dishwasher without a booster heater, it may require a water temperature within a range of 130ºF to 140ºF for optimum cleaning.

Reducing your water temperature to 120ºF also slows mineral buildup and corrosion in your water heater and pipes. This helps your water heater last longer and operate at its maximum efficiency.

Consult your water heater owner’s manual for instructions on how to operate the thermostat. You can find a thermostat dial for a gas storage water heater near the bottom of the tank on the gas valve. Electric water heaters, on the other hand, may have thermostats positioned behind screw-on plates or panels. As a safety precaution, shut off the electricity to the water heater before removing/opening the panels. Keep in mind that an electric water heater may have two thermostats—one each for the upper and lower heating elements.

Mark the beginning temperature and the adjusted temperature on the thermostat dial for future reference. After turning it down, check the water temperature with a thermometer at the tap farthest from the water heater. Thermostat dials are often inaccurate. Several adjustments may be necessary before you get the right temperature.

If you plan to be away from home for at least 3 days, turn the thermostat down to the lowest setting or completely turn off the water heater. To turn off an electric water heater, switch off the circuit breaker to it. For a gas water heater, make sure you know how to safely relight the pilot light before turning it off.
