Fall off your ladder

Wednesday, November 23rd, 2011

How many people do you know that have been injured by a ladder accident?

Don't let this fall be an accident

Summer then Fall

The chances of being injured or even killed are greater than you might imagine. Learn how to properly use a ladder and then don’t take a chance. Make sure you have stable footing for the ladder and don’t reach out too far. If you climb too high on a ladder, the ladder will become unstable. If you don’t have stable footing, an extension ladder can slide and you will ride this ladder to the ground. ( OUCH)

If you call a handy man to do the work, check and make sure they have insurance. In many states, if a worker is injured on your property, they can sue you and take your money and property in a court settlement. ( it has happened many times) So how much money can you save on a temp worker vs hiring an insured professional?

As always, the choice is yours. Now you have more information so that you can make a decision on how much do you really want to spend for these festive lights.

Fluorescent LightingFluorescent lamps use 25%-35% of the energy used by incandescent lamps to provide the same amount of illumination (efficacy of 30-110 lumens per watt). They also last about 10 times longer (7,000-24,000 hours).
The light produced by a fluorescent tube is caused by an electric current conducted through mercury and inert gases. Fluorescent lamps require a ballast to regulate operating current and provide a high start-up voltage. Electronic ballasts outperform standard and improved electromagnetic ballasts by operating at a very high frequency that eliminates flicker and noise. Electronic ballasts also are more energy-efficient. Special ballasts are needed to allow dimming of fluorescent lamps.
The two general types of fluorescent lamps are:
• Fluorescent Compact fluorescent lamps
• tube and circline lamps
Compact Fluorescent Lamps

CFLs come in a variety of sizes and shapes, including (a) twin-tube integral, (b and c) triple-tube integral, (d) integral model with casing that reduces glare, (e) modular circline and ballast, and (f) modular quad-tube and ballast varieties.
Compact fluorescent lamps (CFLs) combine the energy efficiency of fluorescent lighting with the convenience and popularity of incandescent fixtures.
CFLs can replace incandescents that are roughly 3-4 times their wattage, saving up to 75% of the initial lighting energy. Although CFLs cost 3-10 times more than comparable incandescent bulbs, they last 6-15 times as long (6,000-15,000 hours).
CFLs work much like standard fluorescent lamps. They consist of two parts: a gas-filled tube and a magnetic or electronic ballast. The gas in the tube glows with ultraviolet light when electricity from the ballast flows through it. This, in turn, excites a white phosphor coating on the inside of the tube, which emits visible light throughout the surface of the tube.
CFLs with magnetic ballasts flicker slightly when they start. They are also heavier than those with electronic ballasts. This may make them too heavy for some light fixtures. Electronic ballasts are more expensive but light immediately (especially at low temperatures). They are also more efficient than magnetic ballasts. The tubes will last about 10,000 hours and the ballast about 50,000 hours. Most currently available CFLs have electronic ballasts.
CFLs are designed to operate within a specific temperature range. Temperatures below the range cause reduced output. Most are for indoor use, but there are models available for outdoor use. A CFL’s temperature range is usually listed on its package.
CFLs are most cost-effective and efficient in areas where lights are on for long periods of time. Because CFLs do not need to be changed often, they are ideal for hard-to-reach areas.
Types of Compact Fluorescent Lamps
CFLs are available in a variety of styles and shapes. They may have two, four, or six tubes or circular or spiral-shaped tubes. The size or total surface area of the tube(s) determines how much light is produced.
In some CFLs, the tubes and ballast are permanently connected. Other CFLs have separate tubes and ballasts. This allows the tubes to be changed without changing the ballast. There are also types enclosed in a glass globe. These look somewhat similar to conventional incandescent light bulbs, except they are larger.
Sub-CFLs fit most fixtures designed for incandescent lamps. Although most CFLs fit into existing three-way light sockets, only a few special CFL models can be dimmed.

In fluorescent tubes, a very small amount of mercury mixes with inert gases to conduct electrical current. This allows the phosphor coating on the glass tube to emit light.
Fluorescent tube lamps—the second most popular type of lamps—are more energy efficient than the more popular A-type standard incandescent lamps.
The traditional tube-type fluorescent lamps are usually identified as T12 or T8 (twelve-eighths or eight-eighths of an inch tube diameter, respectively). They are installed in a dedicated fixture with a built-in ballast. The two most common types are 40-watt, 4-foot (1.2-meter) lamps and 75-watt, 8-foot (2.4-meter) lamps.
Tubular fluorescent fixtures and lamps are preferred for ambient lighting in large indoor areas. In these areas, their low brightness creates less direct glare than incandescent bulbs.

Don’t Tell Me you used the same as last month.

Friday, April 2nd, 2010

I hear this everywhere. ” The power company raped me this month on my bill.”    ” I used the same as last month and my bill went up over $75.00″

This is a great way to start a conversation in any crowd if that’s all you want to do; but I usually put a damper on the fun when I ask, ” How many Kilo watt hours did you use last month?”

down the drain

I am as guilty as most people are when they see a large increase in their electric bill and they forget about the extreme cold or hot weather that lasted for 2 weeks. We really do not know how much we use.

If your house were your car, you would never have to stop to fill the tank. Just drive all month and never stop to fill up. Once a month, you get a bill from your preferred gas station (electric company) and mail them a check or use direct deposit.

The complaints would be the same though. Each day we drive a few miles more or a few miles less. Some times we drive real fast and use more fuel, ( hot or cold days) and sometimes we have a heavy load. ( big party with lots of people in the house and all the lights on and all the doors open.)

Here is how your gas bill would be the same each month. (Compare this with your home’s electric usage).

  1. Drive the same exact route each day. No variations.
  2. Stop at the same red light every time for the same amount of time. (no variations)
  3. Use the air conditioning for the same amount of time every time.
  4. Drive the same speed on the same route every day. (no variations)
  5. No side trips to the mall or the theater. ( unless you do it every day)
  6. Temperature and road conditions must stay the same each day.
  7. Wind and rain must not vary from day to day over the monthly driving  period.
  8. The price for fuel must stay the same from day to day.

  1. run your house like your car

Do the above conditions seem ridiculous? Do you think you could ever have 1 month exactly the same as the previous month?

Our house is the same example. In order to have the same power usage from month to month, we have to duplicate each day as it plays out during the billing period.

  1. All ways have shade or full sun. Never vary during the billing period from the previous period.
  2. The wind and temperature must duplicate the previous billing period. Same times and temps.
  3. You must turn on (and Off) the exact same lights for the exact same time as the previous period.
  4. You must open and close the fridge door the same.
  5. You must wash and dry the exact same laundry loads.
  6. You must use your computer and printer the same.
  7. You must watch TV for the exact same amount of minuets.
  8. Open and close each door of the house for the same amount of time on the same day as the temp is the same and the wind is the same as the last billing period.
  9. Use the same amount of hot water.
  10. Cook the same foods for the same amount of time.  ( coffee and toast too)

Does this look completely insane?  Who could live this life; even if the weather would co-operate?

Our lives change just like the weather. Maybe not as much but they change daily.

Now for the good news.  You can take control of your energy bills. In order for you to control the electricity, you have to be able to “see” or measure it.  As you measure it, you will find areas that you are using too much and you can control the amount you use.

As you measure it, you can record it and compare it to other months or to other homes in the area.

The measuring device we suggest is called the Energy Detective.  Call the office and we will send you more info on this great measuring device. With this great device, you can watch your electric usage in real time from your computer or any web enabled phone. Measure and manage.

We are your local Denton electrician, Copppell electrician, Lewisville electrician bringing you great service and value. Ask about whole house surge protection or security lighting. We install 200 amp panels and phone lines. We install GFCI outlets and repair lights and plugs. Need some awesome outdoor lights, Call Jeffries Electric

energy costs money

I saw an ad on TV for office products. The man stood in front of the items and cried out ” Boy! that’s a low price!

HOW low is low? Do you pay a low price for your electricity?

Well folks, technology to the rescue. You can now install a great recording device to let you monitor and record your energy usage. See my previous blog on the Energy Detective.

  • Do you know if your price is really low, vs the amount of electricity you really use?
  • Have you used so much energy to heat or cool your home that the total bill is staggering ?
  • When you get your electric bill,  can you compare it to the amount the Power Company recorded and see how accurate they are ?
  • Can you see if some of your appliances or your habits are more expensive than you expected ?
  • Can you compare your bill to others in the area?
  • If you don’t measure, you can not manage.

We have solutions to your energy costs and your energy usage. You may want to find a lower cost per Kw Hr and / or you may want to use less energy.  Some of these are easy to do and some take more effort.

If you just want to see how much electricity you are really using, The Energy Detective is a great way to measure your usage.

The best way to approach energy conservation  is with a full energy audit of your home. Many company’s do this complete audit and some power companies will provide a good audit for free.

Our electricians will be glad to do a cursory audit of the electrical system in your home and recommend areas that could save you money. Our most common question after we come to a home, is:  “How can I lower my electric bill?” be

I will try to keep an updated list of companies that provide full energy audits. I would suggest that you don’t use the same company that provides the audit to do necessary repairs or replace major equipment. Always get a second opinion. If you use an insulation company to do a full audit, will they be uptodate on the A/C units.  Their 1st duty to the company is to sell insulation.

Start with your power company. Ask if they will provide an audit for your home. These usually are free but they do not go into great depth.

Energy conservaton  is best approached as a system and not taken by bits and pieces. Some cures cost little and save much. Some may cost much and have small effects on energy savings.

The US Dept of Energy is another resource. They have tons of data. Find them on the web.

We are your local electrician bringing great service and quality to your home. We install GFCI outlets and 200 amp panels. We can design great lighting or install your new lights for you. We are your denton electrician, lewisville electrician, coppell electrician working to keep you safe in your home. Ask about whole house surge protection and secuity lighting.

How much do you really spend on Electricty

Monday, March 29th, 2010

Most customers ask us how they can reduce their electric bill. It is so easy to say ” Conserve Electricity.” or we can say there are many ways to save by not using as much. ie., better windows, more insulation, more efficient appliances. This is where you can really save money, At the Meter.

smart meters

electric meters

What I’ve found in my own home, is; I don’t pay enough attention to my electricity usage until I get the monthly bill.

Now we have smart meters to contend with. Do you know what makes them smart?  I don’t. I understand the technology that drives the mechanism. I understand the communication protocol that send billing info to the power company. None of this is rocket science.

But what is so smart about a very accurate device that sends info off to an unseen company and won’t let you see what going on?  Won’t even give you little peak at the data. I wouldn’t call that smart.

I think I would like to see what I’m paying for. Even at the local store, I can look at the items I want and decide if I want to purchase before I hand over the money.

With your electric utility company, you pay for an unseen product and you have no way to tell if your getting what you ordered. What if I got only 3lbs of steak, and I ordered 5lbs?  What if the grocery wrapped up bleu cheese and not swiss?  At least I could ask for a refund.

Well folks; a new age has dawned. Now you can see and measure your power before you get the bill. I won’t say you can order green instead of blue, but I can tell you if got 5 lbs and not 4.88 lbs of power. Really not new, but some thing much easier to use and less costly to install than a few years ago. This new device is called ” The Energy Detective”.  Other things you can measure and manage on an  instant or daily basis are

  • total power usage
  • daily power usage
  • instant power usage
  • large or small appliances
  • views by Kwh or by dollar amount $
  • I phone apps let you see your homes power while you’re at work.
  • many more
  • last months power usage history ( after 1 month of recording)

Take a look at this web site and let us know if you would like to see your power before you buy it.
